WorkLife Advent Calendar
Happy Holidays! It’s that time of year again. For some the holiday season is busy with activities, Christmas preparations and company. We like to keep it simple but I still have a list of things to do for the holidays. It happened on December 1 that I was getting the main traffic areas of our carpet cleaned. The carpet cleaner and I were chatting about how people are inspired to clean up their space before Christmas and I thought … wouldn’t it be fun to have a WorkLife Advent Calendar to get stuff done while maintaining balance over Christmas. The carpet cleaner thought that was a bit over the top but it got me thinking. So, here’s my first take on the WorkLife Advent Calendar idea and a couple more holiday tips.
Make a WorkLife Advent Calendar
Step 1. If you are a WorkLife Subscriber, go to the WorkLife Wednesdays page ) and download and print ) the monthly activity planner and ) the Blank mind map.
If you aren’t a member use a blank piece of paper and your regular planning calendar, or sign up to find these items 🙂
Step 2. Brainstorm. Sit quietly for a few minutes to think about what a great holiday season would look like. What would you be doing? Who would you be spending time with? What ideas do you and your family members have for fun and maintaining health and balance over the holidays?
Step 3. Write a list of what needs to be done, and by when. Tip: Use two colors to highlight what needs to be done vs. nice to do. Keep the nice to to items tentative. If you start feeling overloaded the nice to do’s come off the list.
Step 4. Now make your work/life advent calendar. Ok there’s no chocolates with this version, but you can still make it fun and the intrinsic rewards will compensate for the lack of chocolate! Take your monthly activity calendar and write down all items on your list tied with specific dates, then add in other items remembering not to over-commit. Include some seasonal fun, time with family and friends, and time to Take 5 for self-care and balance.
Gift giving? Seems many people are cutting back on gift giving. We still give a few gifts but try to make sure they are functional or fun. SPOILER ALERT! This year my main gifts are
) new go-to cookbook ‘Against All Grain: Delectable Paleo Recipes to Eat Well and Feel Great‘ by Danielle Walker, and a few of the key ingredients people might not have;
) awesome Escher puzzle and puzzle mat for family fun!;
) homemade cranberry sauce for neighbours.
The spirit of Christmas ~ Ideas !
- ) Make up or contribute to a hamper at home or work, phone your local food bank to get a list of hamper items.
- ) Check out your local community calendar for ideas of seasonal activities, most of these are free! Make Christmas about doing things rather than buying things.
- ) Use the meal planner and shopping list, on the WorkLife Wednesday page (subscribers.) I find this a huge help during busy times.
